Black Out Web Sites
Blacking out web sites can be an effective means for raising
awareness about an important issue. Here is an
example of what the Online
Policy Group web site front page will look like on April 20,
2001, to protest on the effective date of the CHIPA legislation.
The following sites have notified us of their participation in
the CHIPA blackout campaign:
Blacking out your web site can be easy. Just follow these simple
steps:
-
Obtain the HTML code file for the front page of your web site
(usually named
index.htm
or
index.html
)
and save a copy of it into another filename (such as
indexhome.htm
or
indexhome.html
).
-
Open the front page HTML code file in your favorite editor.
-
Change the attributes of the
<BODY>
tag as follows to
assign the background color as black and the text and link
colors as white (
"000000"
represents the color black and
"FFFFFF"
represents the color white)--
<BODY BGCOLOR="000000" TEXT="FFFFFF" LINK="FFFFFF" VLINK="FFFFFF" ALINK="FFFFFF">
-
Within tables you may need to change the background color to black
by using
BGCOLOR="000000"
.
-
Anywhere where the text still appears as a color other than white,
you can change the color by using the
<FONT COLOR="FFFFFF">
and
</FONT>
tags before and after the text.
-
Insert a text explanation of why the site is blacked out; see
the example.
-
Add a link or links from the blacked out front page HTML code file
to any other web page or pages you want the visitor to visit;
make sure any links are visible on the blacked-out background.
-
Save the front page HTML code file.
-
Load the front page HTML code file and the saved copy HTML code
file onto the web server for your web site.
-
Once the protest is over, you can replace the saved copy HTML
code file into the usual front page HTML code file location.
