Bio: Michael Shinn

Mr. Shinn has a distinguished technology background in both the public and private sector. He sits on the board of directors of several technology companies and is a published author and columnist whose writing appears in numerous technology and security periodicals. Michael has built several successful information security and technology firms and is currently a Managing Partner of the Prometheus Group and co-founder of End State, a compliance and risk management firm where he is also a Managing Partner. In addition to his current responsibilities, he is working on a book about compliance-focused risk management. Michael is also an active member of the privacy community, where he has been running remailers for a number of years, including the EPIC/GILC anonymous web remailer.

Previously, Mr. Shinn was the Chairman and CEO of Secure Software, a company that is directly addressing the epidemic of security vulnerabilities in today's software products by helping companies produce better software. Before founding Secure Software, he was a Managing Partner of The Shadow Group, a successful Information Security consulting firm which was acquired in May of 2001. Mr. Shinn was also a co-founder of Plesk, Inc and its Chief Technical Advisor for a number of years. Plesk is an innovative software firm that develops applications for simplifying the full range of server management and configuration. Currently, Mr. Shinn serves on the company's board of directors.

Prior to founding Plesk, he was a member of Cisco Systems' Advanced Network Security Research group, and was also a Senior Software Developer and founding member of Cisco's Signatures and Exploits Development Team, where he worked on Cisco's Intrusion Detection and Vulnerability Assessment products. As a key member of The Wheelgroup Corporation, which was later acquired by Cisco Systems, he led the development of the security consulting practice as one of its chief technical leaders and while part of a two person sales team, consistently led the company in sales.

Previously, Mr. Shinn was a Senior Systems Architect on the US Securities and Exchange Commission Internet EDGAR project, and while a part of the White House technology staff, he worked on security and penetration testing of both internal and Internet connected systems, as well as part of the core team that developed the Whitehouse's first web presence.

Shinn proudly served nine years in the U.S. Army in the Light Infantry.
