Bio: Cynthia Cooper
Cynthia A. Cooper, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor and Director of the Media
Research Lab in the Department of Mass Communications at Southern Illinois
University -- Edwardsville (SIUE). She teaches undergraduate and graduate
courses in mass media law and policy, First Amendment law, media management
and media research. Her current research projects investigate Internet
hate speech, universal access, protection of unpopular speech,
psychophysiological responses to hate speech, and modern interpretations/
applications of the First Amendment. Cooper has degrees in mass
communications from the University of Tennessee (Ph.D.), University of
Oklahoma (M.S.) and the University of Tulsa (B.S.).
Cooper is the recipient of numerous faculty and student fellowships from
the Annenberg Washington Policy Center, the National Association of
Television Producers and Executives (NATPE), and the International Radio
and Television Society (IRTS). She has professional experience as a
television and multimedia producer and health care administrator.
Cooper is the author and contributing author of three books on television
violence regulation including her book Violence on Television:
Congressional Inquiry, Public Criticism and Industry Response, published
in 1996. She has also published in the areas of Internet hate speech,
television violence ratings and teaching assessment. She has presented
numerous papers at regional and national conferences of the International
Communications Association (ICA), the Broadcast Education Association
(BEA), the Association of Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC) and
the National Communications Association (NCA). Cooper is a member of BEA,
AEJMC, ICA and NATPE.
